Retro Revival Blog Challenge Week 2: Event TV
I try not to stray too far from the topics of toys, comics and running a website in the Mercheum Blog. I am going to make an exception today to answer the second Retro Revival Blog Challenge. This week’s challenge is Event Television: Is there anything that happens on television each year that you just hate to miss? (from the Internet Archive Wayback Machine)
There were plenty of shows I faithfully tuned in to each week, such as the Richie Rich cartoons, but those do not count as “events”. When I was younger, I would watch all of the Rankin/Bass specials each year, such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I also watched the Peanuts cartoons, such as A Charlie Brown Christmas. But I have not watched any of those in years.
The television events that do still matter to me are parades. Growing up, it was our family tradition to start setting up the Christmas tree during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and to take it down during the Rose Parade. We still put up and take down decorations on this schedule, although we don’t put up a tree any more because of our two cats. Missing either of these parades on television makes the whole holiday season feel “off” to me somehow.
As of when I am posting this, there have been no other replies to the challenge. Once more come in, I will try to update this post.
Updates: the Retro Rambler has answered his own challenge with the Royal Rumble:

20 Years Before 2000 talks about the NBA All-Star Weekend:
All through my younger years, right up through my early years of being married, tuning into the Macy’s parade was an annual tradition. Then my kids came along and I tried to get them into it as well, but the excitement has never been there for them. Now I turn it on for only a few minutes and don’t watch with any regularity.
I can understand kids not being excited about the Rose Parade, but I’m surprised they don’t like the Macy’s Parade. Sorry to hear your “event TV” is now a non-event!
Your tradition involving the parades makes sense. I miss the Macy’s TG parade. Since I do not have cable and my antennae does not pick up anything but PBS and CW for the most part, I haven’t seen it in years and like you, my holiday seems off due to it.
Wow, that’s rough! I really don’t watch a lot of television, but I do pay for cable and get a fair number of channels. Some content you can watch on the Internet now, but I still find that awkward. Just call me old fashioned I guess!
