Today’s exhibit is the “really nice Casper item” I acquired at Albany Comic Con in June. At that convention, I saw a vendor I had not seen before with a table full of interesting older items. One item in particular caught my eye, the “Casper the Friendly Ghost Game” by Milton Bradley Company. I spoke with the vendor, Mr. Darrell C. Pinckney, and found that he does artifact preservation. In the case of this particular game, he had cleaned and deacidified it. It is easily one of the oldest items in the collection, yet it looks almost new thanks to Mr. Pinckney’s efforts. I was happy to be able to buy the game from him, and I hope to work with Mr. Pinckney in the future on preserving the rest of the collection.
I am going to wrap up back to school for this year with the other pencil case in the collection. As you can see, it is the same design on a different color case. Were other colors made? Were other characters depicted? If you have seen any others, or better yet, if you own any others, let me know in the comments or use the Contact the Curator form!
Happy Labor Day! Many of the items in the Harvey Mercheum permanent collection are the same item in different colors. Today’s back to school exhibit is one such item. It is a zippered pencil case, actually very nicely made, depicting Richie Rich and Dollar the Dog. I would have been very happy to have one of these during my school days!
