It’s back to school time! I remember back in elementary school, in addition to new clothes and a new backpack, each year my parents would buy me a new lunch box. I had the rectangular raised metal kind with a thermos inside, featuring whatever show or cartoon I was interested in at the time. I never suspected those lunch boxes I used, abused and discarded would one day become collectibles.
Fellow Toy Bloggers United contest contributor BattleGrip recently posted a couple of articles on lunch boxes (“1989 and Lunch Box Selection”, “Lunchbox Choice Like Going To The Toy Store”, “Lunchboxes a ‘Statement of taste'”). The excellent collectibles website Collectors Weekly has a page dedicated to lunch boxes (in addition to their page on Harvey Comics). There is even a lunch box museum in Columbus, Georgia.
A company called A. S. C. produced some miniature metal lunch boxes, with flat sides and no thermos. They seem too small to be used, so I assume they are strictly for display purposes. Today’s exhibit is one such lunch box, featuring a selection of the Harveytoons characters.
