It was only a couple of weeks ago that I posted about how, while http: versions of hyperlinks to the Harvey Mercheum website will redirect to https:, the redirect is an extra step and slows the process down. I just finished reading a post on Kinsta‘s blog about redirects, and in it, they show measurements of just how much a redirect slows down page load time. You can read the full post here:
I am always looking for ways to improve the Harvey Mercheum website. I mentioned back in March that the Harvey Mercheum website was now using Cloudflare. Cloudflare is more than just a Content Delivery Network (CDN), they offer a number of tools to speed up websites. Back in June, they posted on their blog about one such free tool called Rocket Loader. I have been wanting to try it out, and finally had the time to do so. While the results were not as dramatic as I would have hoped, GTmetrix reports that my PageSpeed score climbed from 82% to 86%, and WebPagetest reports that my load time to document complete dropped from 5.335 seconds to 3.046 seconds, with less requests and less bytes in.
Everything seems to be working normally, but if you experience any problems, please leave a comment below, or use the Contact the Curator form to let me know. If the problems are severe enough to prevent this, please post to the Harvey Mercheum Facebook page. Thank you!
Today is World Photo Day! I am away this weekend and am unable to participate, but photography is very important to this website, so I still wanted to acknowledge the day. Take a moment to visit the World Photo Day website, and while you are there, donate what you can to their Cerebral Palsy Alliance fund raiser.
Two Jigidi puzzles today, the two Casper sticker sheets that I suspect were a prize of some sort. I never did find out for sure, nor did I find out any more about the unusual characters depicted. If you have any information on these stickers or characters, please leave a comment below!
It seems that I am very good at making busy work for myself. I decided that even though http: versions of hyperlinks to the Harvey Mercheum website will redirect to https:, the redirect is an extra step and slows the process down, so I should correct them. While I had to edit all the URLs anyway, I decided to set up campaign parameters to help me track visits in Google Analytics. Once I did that, with the help of the Google Campaign URL Builder, the URLs were long and ugly, so I decided to shorten them using my long-ignored Bit.ly account.
Sorry for the lack of posts as of late. There are a number of things going on right now, some of which directly impact the Harvey Mercheum. I hope to resume posting this weekend, but may not be able to.
In the meantime, today is World Wide Web Day! While browsing the Web today, remember to visit the World Wide Web Foundation, and learn about how they are working for a world where everyone has the same rights and opportunities online.
